What is LJW online?
Let’s start with What is the League of Jewish Women?
Well it’s an organisation, now in its 72nd year, which was set up during the Second World War, so that Jewish women could offer their time and expertise, as volunteers, to all members of the community.
As with all organisations it has evolved from its early beginnings and, while volunteering is still a major part of what its members do, the League offers social events and seminars and activities to both entertain and educate members. Not everyone is a volunteer; not everyone can manage to attend the seminars and events and not everyone can find time to attend the regular group meetings, but for many people, the League has been where they have forged lifelong friendships.
Currently the majority of members belong to a local group, but with the changing times this is not always a viable option for younger working women. This is why LJWonline has evolved. All members will be Central members, will pay their annual subscription (currently £12 per annum), to Head Office and, instead of meeting in local groups, they will meet virtually through social media via Facebook and the LJW website. All the information about seminars and events will be available through emailed flyers and there will be links to the local group web pages.
By having an online presence, members can join from anywhere nationwide and through Facebook will be able to meet socially with other members in their own locality. They can find out about local volunteering opportunities if they have the time and widen their social circle of likeminded Jewish women.
